The recent hike in the price of land has compelled the owners, builders, architects and engineers to rely more than even before, on vertical expansion. Therefore tall buildings are quickly finding their way, with multilevel basements.The truction of such basements requires deep excavation with property line present in the immediate vicinity of the excavations. A host of methods are currently in use the world over for supporting deep excavations. These includes sheet piling, R.C diaphragm walls, strutting, shoring and raking, contiguous / secant pile walls with or without anchors and shotcrete. The last system is gaining popularity among engineers and designers due to its cost benefit and achievable depths for excavation.
